The key to a successful garden starts with proper selection of vegetables that are suitable for the climate of the Pacific Northwest. The Maritime Northwest Garden Guide, by Seattle Tilth Alliance and The Timber Press Guide to Vegetable Gardening in the Pacific Northwest by Lorene Edwards Forkner provide a wealth of information. Both these excellent publications are amongst the reference material available in the Garden’s library. The regionally specific information they offer is a great help in determining when to plant which vegetables.

Once armed with a planting plan gardeners can refer to the following links which provide more in-depth information on specific topics. The section on Gardening Tips covers topics related to bed and soil preparation and the care and management of the plants. Next there is detailed information on vegetables that grow well in the Northwest. Each vegetable is covered in depth with guidance on how to plant, tend and harvest the crop. Any good crop of vegetables will attract pests and even the healthiest plants are attacked by diseases. The third section provides details on those pests and diseases found to occur locally and offers the best, organic methods of controlling or dealing with them.
